The goal of the project is to send 25 children from internally displaced families to school by providing their school fees for one school year as well as paying for the school books and school equipment.

Many months of strikes, civil war, Corona – the regions in the west of Cameroon have been in permanent crisis mode since the end of 2016 and many children have not been able to attend school for months and years. In the meantime, the situation has stabilised to the extent that many schools have reopened. Nevertheless, many children are still denied school attendance.

Even before the so-called “Anglophone crisis”, which began in autumn 2016 (the causes date back to the German colonial era; more than 4,000 people lost their lives and around 1 million people fled), around 20% of all children in the region did not attend primary school because their families could not pay the annual school fees. Girls and orphans in particular were therefore excluded from school.

For the school years 2014-2017, committed Cameroonians from the organisation “Concerned Minds for Habitation Securities” (COMIHAS) collected school fees for disadvantaged children and were supported by German donors.

After this support had to be suspended for 6 years due to the political situation, COMIHAS collected school fees again for the school year 2022/2023 – together with the partner organisation Vivantes Humanitas e.V. in Germany.

This year’s campaign particularly supports children who have fled within the region. A survey of 1,500 families in the towns of Buea, Limbe and Tiko shows that 65% of the families have 2 or more children for whom they cannot afford school fees. Many of these children have to work in the fields or beg instead.

With the support of our donors, we support 25 children (17 girls, 8 boys) to attend school regularly in the school year 2022/2023 through a school fee scholarship and the payment of school books, clothing and materials.

The children are selected in close consultation with the schools. The project manager at COMIHAS is Mr Etandow Randolf Agbornkwai, who already supervised the school fee campaigns from 2014 to 2017.

Vivantes Humanitas e.V. (represented by its member Karin Beese) is responsible for presenting and promoting the project in Germany and for transferring the donations to COMIHAS. As always, we will keep you informed of all developments via the page https://www.facebook.com/comihas.de.
